Diner Visit

by Cat Hartliebe

There is nothing like going to the diner at midnight for coffee and hot open roast beef. It's made even better that Justice is coming with me.

We've made a bunch of trips around the state. We've gone to a bunch of diners. We're seen so many famous places.

But there is nothing quite like the neighborhood diner at midnight with friends.

Justice isn't from the area. They came wanting a full New Jersey experience. So we went places. But really, if it came down to it, the diner experience is number one on the list of New Jersey life.

So we park before the neon lights and shiny exterior. We go inside and grab an open table. They take a menu to look over- some diners are different than others. I know exactly what I'm getting.

"Your usual?" The wait staff knows me. I'm here often. They're here often. But they don't know my friend. "And your friend?"

Justice scans the menu cringing a little at the thing. "Chef salad?"

"Drink?"

"Coffee. Eric said that's the best option."

"Two coffees. Chef salad and hot open roast beef. Be right back."

I grin at my friend from out of state. "Out of everything, what has been your favorite part of New Jersey?"

Justice stares at me. "Learning about it from you."

I blink caught off guard by the answer. "Huh?"

Justice looks to the kitchen. "As to your question from before. The reason I wanted to visit the state." They shrug a little. "Because you're here. The trees were beautiful. The libraries, monuments, history, the shore, everything... It could only be so great because you were telling me about them. I'll never look at a pine tree the same way again." They smile focusing on me again. "And I hope to have the chance to see the ocean a lot more. If you're interested in me visiting again."

"Uh..."

Justice sighs. "Internet crushes don't have to end there. If you're interested."

The wait staff comes over before I have an answer. "Two coffees. Meals will be ready in no time." They offer a knowing smile before walking off. Normally, I have a conversation with the wait staff. Could they know?

Justice shifts a little. I didn't answer them. "Should I take the job offer that brings me closer? That's why we did this. For you to prove the state is worth it."

"It is. You should. It's a better company, and you'll be paid more."

"And what about us... Is that possible?" Justice reviews me again fidgeting with the coffee cup.

I gulp. Never thought they wanted to do this for me. I just wanted to prove the state was worth it. "I don't know."

"I'll accept. The state is beautiful. Just like you. We'll need to do this again once I move." Justice takes a casual sip of coffee.

"Yeah. Of course. Definitely." I nod wildly looking to the kitchen. Midnight diner visit with a friend sounds great.
